Cytokine Storm. Google it. The Cytokine Storm was the great killer of the Spanish flu of 1918 during the second wave which started in October of that year. In a nutshell, a Cytokine Storm is when the body's immune system basically attacks and kills itself. Yes, the Spanish flu virus was the trigger for the many fatalities of 1918, but the virus itself was not the actual bullet that killed. The actual killer, the killer bullet, of many young healthy adults back in 1918, ironically, was their own immune system. The Spanish flu virus was so foreign and so unknown that it caused the immune system to go into a chaotic overdrive. Speaking metaphorically, the immune system launched a full scale 'nuclear war' on the body when it detected the Spanish flu virus but basically ended up nuking itself... and we all know there are no winners in a nuclear war.
That being said, this is what is to be expected when the H1N1 virus mutates during this second wave which we are now experiencing. The real killer in the days to come will not be the actual mutation of the H1N1 virus, rather, it will be our immune system's response to this mutated virus. That's why, IMHO, the current vaccine is useless to the vast majority of people taking it. It would be best to look at ways to actually prevent the immune system from 'launching an all out nuclear attack' on future mutations of the current H1N1 virus. It would be best to find something that actually calms the immune system down so it can defeat the unknown flu virus in it's usual way. Vitamin D is known to calm the Cytokine Storm. Basically, vitamin D helps the immune system to 'chill out and keep a level head' when battling against an unknown flu virus.
But please, do not take my word for it. I am not a doctor, nor am I a influenza expert. There are many websites out there that are excellent sources of information on the benefits of vitamin D with respect to it's influence on the immune system. Once again, like my last article, I warn all Canadians to make sure you are not deficient in your levels of vitamin D going into this second wave of the H1N1 influenza. Most of the vitamin D that Canadians have stored up during the sunny summer months has been depleted. Our summer sun was the best source of vitamin D that we will get this year. Now that we are headed into winter, it is important to eat foods rich in vitamin D and to take vitamin D supplements just to make sure there is no deficiency.
I'll leave you with one more metaphor... viruses are terrorists. Yes, terrorists are dangerous, but they are just terrorists. The real danger is that the terrorists will incite a nuclear war. Vitamin D is the diplomatic solution that helps prevent an all out nuclear war of the Cytokine Storm.
