Getting your own self-hosted website up and running probably isn't as difficult as you think, although there are a few technicalities to it.
I won't go into every little detail, but here is the general process:
1. Register a domain with a service like GoDaddy.com (approximately $10/year.
2. Get web hosting with a service like HostGator.com (approximately $5-$10/month for a small, personal site.) Your hosting company will give you two URL's that are called "Nameservers." They should also provide you with "FTP" login details. These are what you will use to login and edit your site.
3. Go to your registrar account (like GoDaddy.com) and enter your nameservers for your domain. This will point your domain to your host/server. Just look for a link that says "Nameservers" or call your registrar and ask where to enter them for your domain.
4. Find a free website template online. Google is a good place to search. You'll find thousands of free website templates. Download the files of the one you like.
5. Get an FTP client like FileZilla (free) and enter your FTP login details. An FTP clint is just software that you download, which connects to your server through your FTP login details. Once you're connected upload your website template files into the public_html folder. From there you can edit each file. The hopepage will most likely be index.html or index.php
Obviously there are other, more minor details, but that's basically what you need to do in order to get your own website up.
Or.....
here's a far better way.
No fees, no FTP messing about, no html, no hassle.
Go to www.cloudcitysites.com and register for a COMPLETELY FREE website.
No downloading ANYTHING. All you need to do is choose a name for your website, fill in your email and in less than 5 minutes, you have a website.
Hosted, maintained and promoted for FREE!
Give it a go, it will cost you NOTHING!
Just a mention about the above method from Scott using the cloudcitysites.com. It is completely free, but your domain is followed by yourdomain.cloudcitysites.net. So you really don't have your custom URL, or your own. Just a heads up before anyone goes there.
I take your point Bill, but it is YOUR choice of website name. It is UNIQUE because the first part is the users choice. Also remember the benefit of using a URL such as that is that EVERY cloudcity website benefits from being associated with every other site, therefore vastly improving search engine visibility. Also cloudcitysites will promote EVERY website on their own promotion website, FOR FREE. (Unlike lots of other providers!)

Great little Scrib! :)
And as far as FREE sites, well I wouldn't do that, I'd rather register my own domain name and get my own hosting....a domain is like $9 and hosting you can get for like $5 a month. That way you OWN the virtual real estate and can choose to sell it if you want in a few months or a few years on places such as Flippa.com.
Nothing like owning your own web property. ;)
Good point Michelle. BUT why pay for hosting when you can have it for free?
I would always recommend your own domain name which you can always web forward to your cloudcity domain. AND if you have a successful website, you can always sell the domain name. You never sell the hosting space because it's never yours is it? It's only rented!
Also at Cloudcitysites we back link EVERY site we host to every other site. This increases visbility without you doing anything!
There's lots of ways to skin a cat (sorry animal lovers!) but we think we have the easiest and cheapest way!

Scott,
For someone who is looking for a little, personal site your solution is great, although not unique at all. You offer subdomains for free in exchange for your ads being shown on them.
For any kind of serious site though, a domain should be purchased and hosted on your own server. Going with free "sites" which aren't really "sites" they are just subdomains in your case and subdirectories in other cases, puts you at the mercy of that service. If you do something they don't like your site is gone. You also have to deal with having their advertising on your site, which should your own. There are also credibility issues with free "sites" like these.
So for someone who just wants a quick, easy personal site, your service would be great. But in all other cases it isn't a good idea.
Actually Josh, THEY'RE NOT JUST SUB DOMAINS.
They're top level sites in their own right. Not sub directories. Every site is totally seperate to do with as user likes. (as long as it's legal!) They just happen to share part of our domain name.
We also do it differently. Our ads are NOT shown on your site directly. They are placed on a seperate page which DO NOT interfere with your site. Any site a user gets from us is completley blank. Except for one page with our sign up options.
Also we promote all our sites for free. Every site benefits from being linked to every other site.
Our sites are aimed at personal use, clubs, societies AND commerce with a built in shopping cart.
No downloading software, no messing about with FTP and all that nonsense.
lol subdomain.hubsite.com is a subdomain, hate to break it to you ;) hubsite.com/subdirectory/ would be a subdirectory. It seems you may not understand the difference between the two.
Good luck with it. It will be tough to market such an original idea, but I'm sure you will do well with it.
